Leads against suit contracts vary according to the bidding. Listening to the bidding is the number one guideline to help us make that crucial opening lead. Let us see what we can do on the following hands.

 Your choice:
A: J Opener has shown a minimum of 10 cards in the two black suits. Either 6 spades and 5 clubs or 5 spades and 5 diamonds. As we are long in the second suit- clubs, we need to stop declarer from ruffing clubs in the dummy.

 Your choice:
A: 2. Partner is rated to have zero HCP. We cannot lead an ace without the King. ( Aces from spaces- no.They are meant to capture kings) We lead passively from what we do not have in order not to give declarer extra tricks.

 Your choice:
A: J Top of an interior sequence. Declarer is showing 6 spades and 4 hearts. We need to be more aggressive and lead the diamond suit hoping to get tricks quickly and expect partner to either have the Ace or Queen of diamonds. Leading from Qxx is poor as we may never make a trick.

 Your choice:
A: 2. Do not lead a singleton when you have a natural trump trick. Leading unsupported Aces without the King is a no-no!

* A cue-bid of the overcalled suit shows 10 HCP or more and guarantees a fit in the opener's suit. 2NT by opener shows a stopper in spades and a balanced 5-3-3-2 shape.

 Your choice:
A: Q. Leading from a sequence that they are not expecting is far better than leading the K where they have already shown a stopper. This sequence will not give away a trick having 3 cards in the suit. Declarer showed a spade stopper and if declarer has AJ10 you will have given them a second spade stopper.
