8/4 International Clown Week Begins! by Marti Ronemus

The long-awaited International Clown Week starts today. Dare we suggest that many of said clowns find their way to bridge?

With the help of Vu-Bridge, we hope you can avoid their ranks.

We've got five thinking challenges for you plus a hand. Got your red noses and floppy feet ready? (And feel free to honk your clown horn if you disagree!)

Question 1

  Your Hand
 A K 8 7
 3
 A Q 10 9 2
 A 10 9

Q: 1 - As South, what should your bid be?
SouthWestNorthEast
1pass1pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: We are going to be dummy, so that singleton is worth enough points to give us game-going values. We are chock-full of intermediates, and Partner has to play it. Get out of the clown car and bid!

Question 2

  Your Hand
 K Q 3 2
 K 5 4
 J 8 6 2
 9 3

Q: 2 - What should South bid?
SouthWestNorthEast
*-1pass
2pass2*pass
?

*Pard has an intermediate hand 16-18ish, and is asking for help in Spades.

 Your choice:
A: 3: Pard knows we only have 6-9 pts, and is asking for help in Spades. Normally, without help we would bid 3 and with help we'd go to game. BUT! Not only do we have help in Spades, but are at the top of our bid. It isn't wrong to go directly to 4, but why not give a little extra info when we can? This bid shows it all.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 8 7
 A 8 7
 A K 10 5 4
 Q 8 7

Q: 3 - As South, what should you bid?
SouthWestNorthEast
--11
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Cuebidding the opponent's suit promises a fit with partner and a limit raise OR BETTER. Pard is forced for one round. Pard should keep in mind that the cuebid promises that fit. Anything less and you'd have to go back to Clown College.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 2
 A K 9 8 5 4
 A J 5
 A 10 9

Q: 4 - As South, what is your next bid?
SouthWestNorthEast
1pass22
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: We are a little light on points, but the singleton and the ninth trump makes this hand a nice candidate for game. Live a little!

Question 5

  Your Hand
 9 8
 K Q 8 7
 A 10 8 7
 A 9 8

Q: 5 - As South, what now?
SouthWestNorthEast
11double*2
?

*Negative Double, promising four cards in the other major, strong tolerance for the other unbid suit, and 8 ish points.

 Your choice:
A: 3: North's Negative Double is a great bid to hear, and the only way we can find our Heart fit. With the Spade overcall, Pard would need five Hearts to bid them. We could pass since we are "off the hook" and have a minimum opener, but we paid to play.
And now, we get to paint on our big Clown Smile and play the hand. Ready? Set? Fire the cannon!
