Major Leagues: Responding to Major Opener by Marti Ronemus

When Pard opens a major, we know right away he's got a five-card suit. What we do next depends on the size of our hand and whether or not we have a fit.

Please note that we call an "old suit" a suit that has already been bid by you or your Partner. A rebid of such suit is NOT forcing, whatever the level.

A: 3♠: This is an easy warm-up question. We've got 10 pts, 11 with distribution, and a gorgeous trump fit. Our bid shows exactly that. Since we are rebidding an old suit, our bid is NOT forcing. It is a limiting bid and now it's up to Pard what happens next.

A: 2♦: This might surprise you, but you don't want to support the Spades right away. You have a very interesting hand worth 12 pts. This 2♦ bid is unlimited and forcing. Pard WILL bid again, and you'll have a better picture of where you belong. Remember, the better your hand, the slower you tippy-toe up the bidding ladder.

A: 2♠: When you originally picked this hand up, your first inclination was to hit the snooze alarm. BUT! When your Pard bids Spades, you are suddenly interested!

Here's an important point: You are in a non-competitive auction (They are not bidding), so you can just show your fit and limit your hand. Your 2♠ bid shows 6-9 pts. If the opponents enter the auction later, you can bid again because of your trump length. Since you've already limited your hand, Pard won't think you found a king somewhere. He'll know you have extra trump. Got that?
