"Ante Up" -- Openers by Marti Ronemus

The better our game becomes, the less we rely on "rules," because we're developing judgment. Today we return to the subject of texture, those factors that make hands more or less than the sum of their points. We like honors clustered in our long suits, we like shape, we like honorettes (10s, 9s, 8s).

Our question today, is should these hands be opened in first or second seat. We like a pretty sound bid in those two seats. So, what do you think of these five hands? (And remember, if you're on the fence we'd rather be IN the fight that watching from the sidelines.)

Question 1

  Your Hand
 A Q 9 3
 Q 7 4 3
 3
 K J 8 4

Q: 1 - Should this be opened in first or second seat? What, if anything, should be your bid?

 Your choice:
A: 1: My goodness! We've got 12 HCP (high card points), a great shape, and honors focused in our long suits. What are you waiting for?

Question 2

 Q J 4
 Q J 8
 Q J 4 3
 Q J 4

Q: 2 - How about this in first or second seat?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: This is the absolute ugliest 12 HCP we'll ever see. 4-3-3-3. Quacky, quacky, quacky (that's queens and jacks). This hand has nothing to commend it. We're going to pass and enter the auction later.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 A 8 4 3
 A 9 3
 7 3 2
 A 7 4

Q: 3 - And this one?

 Your choice:
A: 1: Again, we have 12 HCP AND we've got three quick tricks. Well worth opening the bidding.

Question 4

 J 9 8 4 3
 A Q 7 6 5

 K 7

Q: 4 - What say you, in first or second?

 Your choice:
A: 1: Oh yeah, we are opening this even tho' it's only got 10 HCP. It has two five-card majors, length points, a nice rebid. This is NOT the time to sit quietly!

Question 5

  Your Hand
 Q J 6 4 3
 J
 Q J 8 5 4
 Q J

Q: 5 - One last time. Should we open?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Yes, it has 12 HCP, just like the last hand. Yes, it's super shapely. BUT! There are no quick tricks, and it quacks like a mallard. Sorry, Charlie.

And now, get ready for a great hand. Your play will need to be as sharp as your bidding.
