"National Kite Month" by Marti Ronemus

Recently I saw a sky full of kites at a local park. If that doesn't make you smile... The trick champion kite flyers know is -- balance. The perfect mixture of kite shape, air lift, and other indefinable qualities make for success.

Today's hands give you a chance to fly high. We're going to see the same bidding sequence, and as opener, we're going to be asked to make the perfect third bid. Let's see what we can do.

A: 3♠: With all those quacks, this hand isn't going to sail very high in the sky. We've shown our six-card Heart suit. Now it's time to take a preference. We like a 5-2 split in Spades more than we like a 4-3 in Clubs. Pard can still park it in 3 No-trump. It's his problem now.

A: 4♣: This is the toughest, isn't it? Our other choice would be 3 No-trumps which wouldn't be the worst thing ever. Our Club suit would be our transportation. BUT!! Where is our source of tricks? We think we're probably better off in a suit. We each have a distributional hand and you know what a mess THAT can be.
