"No Housework Day" by Marti Ronemus

Well, finally. Just like back in February when we had "Spunky Old Broads Day," another day just for me. Housework will be here long after we are dead and forgotten, but the pleasures today offers will only be here... today. SO!! Throw away those mops! Unplug the vacuum! Put away the dust rag!

Instead, let's houseclean our bidding, tidy up our defense, and make our game sparkle. Ready? Get out that can of Pledge, and let's go.

Q: 1 - As South, how shall we end this sequence?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1 No-trumpPass
2Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Pard's 2 bid was a "false preference. He could have as few as two Spades for you. With this hand, we hope to "clean up," so we need to make a forward-going bid. When we rebid Hearts, we show that we are five-five with a more than minimum hand. Pard will put us in game if we have an eight-card fit, or the best suit at the three-level. Can Pard pass our 3? Yes. Without an eight-card fit, he can correct to 3 or pass our 3.

 A Q J 8 3
 J 5 3

Q: 2 - South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 1 No-trump: Whatever you bid on this one, it's a bit of a lie. 1 No-trump suggests a more balanced hand. 2 promises six Diamonds. 2 would be a reverse, promising a much bigger hand. Pass would send us immediately to the dustbin. We like 1 No-trump because it is very limiting. 2 is a close second choice.

 Your choice:
A: 3: We need to do something to "polish the silver" on this hand. Our jump-sift shows a monster hand. Does our bid guarantee a five-card Club suit? No.

Q: 4 - This hand is a lot like the last one. How will we bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
111Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: The lovely thing about the Dreaded Reverse is that, at a lower level, we get to tell our whole story. Our Club suit is longer than our Diamond suit. We've got a huge hand. We're bidding a suit our Pard by-passed, and it's forcing. Give yourself the Good Housekeeping Award for this one.

Q: 5 - South?
SouthWestNorthEast

1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Tough one. Pard has reversed, showing five Diamonds and four Hearts. We don't have a fit with either. This is one of those times when a rebid of a five-card suit is permissible. The other bid that makes the most sense is 3, knowing it's a 5-2 fit.

Well, now that we've cleaned out the corners of our bidding, let's try playing a hand.
