Our lesson today is on transfers, formally named Jacoby Transfers. In bridge, many conventions are named for the person who first developed and popularized them. Simple enough, right?
In the business world, the original names aren't always the ones that stick. Some outstanding examples: Google was originally named "Backrub." Really? Pepsi was "Brad's Drink." Nike, "Blue Ribbon Sports." Best Buy at first was "Sound of Music." I wonder if there was a copyright problem with that. Playboy was "Stag Party" and Snapple was "Unadulterated Food Products." Just doesn't have the same ring.
My favorite, though, is the original (and prescient!) name of Amazon... "Relentless."
And so, on to our lesson on the simply named Transfers.
Just to review. When we have a five-card or longer major (we'll deal with minors another day), we bid the suit directly below the one we hold. That way, the No-trump opener will say the suit first and the big hand hidden, which is worth a half trick.
Let's see what happens next as the auction develops.
