5 Leads with the same hand! by Matthias Huberschwiller

In today’s quiz, you’ll lead five times with the same hand.

Only the bidding sequence will be different and will help you determine which will be the best lead.

It is your lead!

Question 1

  Your Hand
 2
 Q 10 9 3
 J 6 2
 Q J 9 8 3

Q: 1 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
1 NTPass3 NTPass
PassPass

 Your choice:
A: 10 – After the sequence 1NT – 3NT, it is often best to lead a major because dummy has denied a four-card major and declarer a five card major whereas they can have a long suit in one of the minors.

Therefore, it is preferable to lead a Heart, also because your partner is more likely to have something in Hearts than in Clubs.

 Q J 9 8 3

Q: 2 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast

PassPass

 Your choice:
A: 2 – There is no reason not to lead your singleton. It gives you good chances to be able to ruff with your trumps before declarer has the time to take them from you.

Question 3

Q: 3 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass2Pass
2Pass4Pass
PassPass

 Your choice:
A: Q – Here, your opponents play a Heart contract; you have natural trump tricks.

In that case, you must not lead your singleton Spade because you don’t need to ruff to get trump tricks. On the contrary, you need to lead from your length in Clubs, trying to establish tricks there.

Question 4

 Q 10 9 3
 J 6 2
 Q J 9 8 3

Q: 4 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
--11
3 NTPassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: Q – When you have a singleton in your partner’s suit, the opponents often have seven cards in the suit and leading the suit risks to rather help them than establish tricks for your partner.

It doesn’t look as if South has a real problem in Spades, so it is better to lead from your own good five-card suit to establish a trick there and hope to get back on lead with a Heart to be able to cash it.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 2
 Q 10 9 3
 J 6 2
 Q J 9 8 3

Q: 5 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1 NTPass
2PassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: 2 – What do you know about your opponents’ hands? North has passed over South’s Two Diamond bid, so he has a weak hand and few cards in Hearts.
This will certainly allow declarer to ruff his Heart losers in dummy.
How to counter that plan? By leading a trump to limit the number of ruffs.
