 Suit Combinations by Matthias Huberschwiller

In this quiz, you won't have any leads to make. Rather, you will have suits to play as declarer.

For each question, the Clubs will be the holding in your hand, and the Spades dummy's.

You'll need to choose the right way to play the suit.

Good luck.

Q: 1 - How do you play the suit to make five tricks?

You have as many entries as needed in both hands.

 Your choice:
A: Play the Ace and then the King - With 9 cards, you must not finesse, unless there's an inference to the contrary.

Question 3

  Your Hand
North A K 10 9

South  8 7 4 2

Q: 3 - How do you play the suit to make the maximum number of tricks?

You have as many entries as needed in both hands.

 Your choice:
A: Low to the 10 first - You need to take the double finesse immediately. It's your best chance to make four tricks.

If the finesse fails, you will then cash the Ace. If they are 3-2, you will make the rest. If West has 4 cards, you will be able to finesse against his remaining honor.

You will make two tricks only when East has Q-J-x-x-(x).

Question 4

  Your Hand
North A Q 3

South J 7 2

Q: 4 - How do you play the suit to make three tricks?

You have as many entries as needed in both hands.

 Your choice:
A: Play low to the Queen and then the Ace - You are certain to take two tricks. Your only chance for three tricks is to find West with a singleton or doubleton King. Play small to the Queen, then cash the Ace.

If you start with the Jack, West will cover, and you will have no chance of making three tricks.
