When is 4NT Blackwood? by David

In many auctions it will be clear that a 4NT bid is Blackwood, or perhaps Roman Keycard Blackwood if that is what you play. However, there are some auctions in which 4NT has a quite different meaning. We will take a look at some situations in this quiz.

You will be South throughout the quiz. If you think 4NT is Blackwood on a problem, use Roman Key card responses: 5 = 1 or 4 key cards, 5 - 0 or 3 keycards, 5 = 2 keycards, 5 = 2 keycards plus the queen of trumps. (Note that the king of trumps is a keycard).

Q: 1 - What will you say next after the start to the auction shown below?
SudOuestNordEst

 Your choice:
A: 4. There is a chance of a slam, but you are not good enough to bid Blackwood. In any case, 4NT by you would not be Blackwood now; it would be a natural slam try in notrump.

You should bid 4 to invite a club slam. If partner then bids 4, this would be a control bid, agreeing clubs as trumps and showing the ace of diamonds.

?

 Your choice:
A: Pass. When you are in 3NT and you invite a slam by bidding four of a minor, partner's return to 4NT is to play and shows little interest in a slam. Here you should pass the 4NT bid. If you would be better off in 5, partner would have bid that instead., Perhaps he has a singleton club.

 Your choice:
A: Pass. Your partner's 4NT is not Blackwood. It is a natural slam try, asking you to to bid 6NT (or perhaps six of a suit if you have a 5-carder somewhere.) Here you are minimum and will pass.

Q: 4 - What will you bid here?

?

 Your choice:
A: 5. 4NT is not Blackwood. It shows a big two-suiter in the minor suits. You are asked to choose one of the minors. Your response is 5, because your diamonds are longer than your clubs.

(If 4NT was RKCB, Roman Keycard Blackwood, your response would have been 5 with one keycard. It would make no sense for 4NT to be RKCB here, because you would not know the trump suit.)
