Responding To Weak Two-bids by David

In this quiz, we will look at responding to weak-two bids.

As always, you will be sitting South. Unless stated otherwise, assume that the score is 'neither vulnerable'.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 K 9 7 2
 8 3
 A 8 7 6 2
 J 4

Q: 1 - What will you respond to partner's 2?
SouthWestNorthEast
--2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4. You have no reason to expect to make this contract, and your response is obstructive. There is a good chance that the opponents can make something good in hearts or clubs. Let them have the big decision!

Question 2

  Your Hand
 4
 A Q J 6 5 2
 K 8 7
 K 3 2

Q: 2 - What will you do now?
SouthWestNorthEast
--2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass. A response of 3 would be forcing and completely unsound on this hand. Even if 3 were not forcing, you would have no reason to think that nine tricks in hearts were more likely than eight in spades.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 Q J 6
 7
 A K Q 10 6 4 2
 A J

Q: 3 - This time, partner opens 2. What will you do?
SouthWestNorthEast
--2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3NT. You will have a good prospect of making nine tricks in no-trump. Your partner should not even consider rebidding his hearts. You know already that he is very likely to hold six hearts and are telling him where the deal should be played.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 Q 8
 K J 6 2
 A J 7
 K 10 6 5

Q: 4 - You have opening-bid values and partner has opened 2. What will you do?
SouthWestNorthEast
--2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass. Most players overbid opposite weak-two openings. When you have a weak no-trump type with no special fit, there is no reason to expect game to be made.

Don't sit in your chair trying to picture a perfectly-fitting maximum opener where partner might scrape ten tricks. He is just as likely to have some miserable 6-count. Remember that a weak-two bid is a preempt. Its aim is to get in the way of the opponents - to make their bidding harder.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 K 7 6
 K J 8 4
 A K 9 2
 J 10

Q: 5 - How do you evaluate the game chances when partner opens 2? What action will you take?
SouthWestNorthEast
--2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2NT. A 2NT response shows at least a game-try in partner's suit and asks him to describe his hand further. There are various ways for the opener to do this. A simple method is to sign off in 3 with a minimum, otherwise to bid a high-card feature in a side-suit. Or, you can assign meanings to 3, 3, 3 and 3. For example, lower-range with a poor suit, lower-range with a good suit, upper-range with a poor suit, upper-range with a good suit.

You cannot be sure that game is worthwhile on this hand. Suppose partner has QJ10xxx in spades and the K, for example.

Question 6

  Your Hand
 A K J 7 6 4
 8
 A J 6
 Q 7 3

Q: 6 - What will you say when partner opens 2?
SouthWestNorthEast
--2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2. Is this response forcing? Yes, say some players. Others prefer to have a non-forcing game-try available at the two-level. (Three-level responses are forcing.)

Here, you might have a spade game available if partner's hand is a maximum or has some sort of spade fit. You would be happy if your agreement was to play 2 - 2 (or 2 - 2, when 2 is weak) as a non-forcing game-try.
