After 1NT is Doubled by David Bird

How should both sides react after an opening 1NT has been doubled for penalties?

In this quiz, we will look at some of the possible situations.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 6 3
 10 8 7 2
 J 9 4 3
 J 8 5

Q: 1 - Neither side is vulnerable and your partner's 1NT has been doubled for penalties. What will you do? (We assume partner has 15-17 HCP, but it's the same position if it is 12-14.)
SouthWestNorthEast
--1NTDble
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass. You do not need to bid to tell partner that you are weak and do not relish the idea of 1NT doubled as a contract. You should consider rescuing only when you have a suit of at least five cards.

Question 2

 8 7 3
 8 5 4 2
 10 6
 Q 10 7 6

Q: 2 - Now it is your partner who has doubled their 1NT. East passes. What will you do?
SouthWestNorthEast

 Your choice:
A: Pass. Again, you should not rescue on a four-card suit. You have no reason to think that 2 will score more tricks than defending 1NT.

Partner might have a five-card spade suit and he may not bid 2 if he thinks you have a five-card club suit. Also, partner may sometimes be able to beat 1NT in their own hand.

Question 3

 9 6 4
 K 8 7 3 2
 J 3

Q: 3 - This time, you are pleased to hold 8 HCP when partner is doubled in a 15-17 HCP 1NT. What will you do?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1NTDble
?

 Your choice:
A: Redouble. With at least 23 HCP your way, you should let partner know. If there is no further bidding, there is every chance that partner will make the contract, possibly with an overtrick or two.

If instead West runs into some suit contract, your partner may be able to double them, knowing that you have some points in your hand.

Question 4

 8 7 3 2
 6 4
 Q 9 7 6 2
 8 2

Q: 4 - What will you do now?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1NTDble
?

 Your choice:
A: 2. With a five-card suit, it is worth rescuing. You may escape a double, or 2 may cost less than 1NT doubled.

The odds have changed from when you have a four-card suit. It is not necessarily a bad board if you go one or two down as the opponents may have a game somewhere.

Question 5

  Your Hand

 J 5 4 2
 9 7 6
 10 5 3

Q: 5 - East has redoubled. What will you do?

?

 Your choice:
A: Pass. You do not need to run, into a four-card suit, to tell partner that you are weak and very worried about defending 1NT redoubled. He knows that already from East's redouble.

If you bid 2, you may find partner with a doubleton. Meanwhile, he might hold a five-card minor, where he could have rescued into a better fit.
