Game Auctions (1) by David Bird

In this quiz, we will look at some game auctions.

You will be able to match your biding against that of the experts.

Question 1

 K Q 6 5 2
 Q 10 4

Q: 1 - What will you say next?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
1Pass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass. Your partner's jump is non-forcing. If they had enough for game, they would have bid Fourth-suit Forcing (2 here) before rebidding the heart suit.

Question 2

  Your Hand

 A Q 7 6
 A K 10 6 2
 K 5 4

Q: 2 - Your side is vulnerable. What will you do facing partner's 3 opening?
SouthWestNorthEast
--3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4. Your partner should have a fairly strong suit for a vulnerable three-bid. You can add some top cards and should raise to 4.

Responding 3NT is not a good idea. Partner has a generally weak hand and you might make no spade tricks at all.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 K 4
 8 6
 A Q 8 6 5
 A K 10 4

Q: 3 - Partner has bid the fourth suit. What is your next move?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
2Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2. Your partner's Fourth-suit bid is forcing to game, so you do not have to jump now, to show your strength. 2 does not promise three spades. Indeed, if you had three spades, you might bid 3 now, expecting partner to have a five-card suit.

If partner bids 3 or 3 next, you can mark time with 3 to ask if he can bid 3NT.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 Q 8
 10 8 2
 9 7 6 5
 A Q J 5

Q: 4 - What will you do next?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1NTPass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2. Easily best is to give 'false preference' to spades. Partner might be 5-5 in the majors, but 5-4 is more likely, and a 5-2 fit plays better than a 4-3 one. There is less chance of losing trump control.

Apart from that, you have 9 HCP and partner might easily have 16 or so. By bidding 2 rather than passing, you give your partner a chance to bid again. He might bid 2NT or 3, for example.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 A Q 7 6
 6
 J 7 4
 A Q 8 7 2

Q: 5 - What will you respond to partner's opening bid?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2. How many times do you see players responding 1 on such a hand? It is wrong, wrong, wrong. If partner rebids 2, you will be stuck. "I can bid 3," they will say.

Yes, but if the auction starts 1 - 2 - 2 - 2, you will be a level lower (with more space to use) AND you will have told partner that your clubs are longer than your spades. It is just so much better!

Of course, you need to be strong enough to bid twice. If you had 6-10 HCP, you would be entitled to respond 1 with this shape.

Question 6

  Your Hand
 A 10 7 6
 5 4
 A J 8 2
 Q 9 5

Q: 6 - What will you bid next?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2NT. You want to invite a game and you have a good stopper in the unbid suit. You rebid 2NT - perfect! 2 would be quite wrong. It would be a fourth-suit bid, saying nothing about your diamonds and also forcing to game.

Replace your Q with a low club and you would not be strong enough for 2NT. You would give 'false preference' to 2.
