wWat partner promised by Frank Stewart

Even when the opponents don't get into the bidding (or only a little), the question often remains what partner promised and how should you evaluate your hand accordingly.

Test your skills in these five questions.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 Q 5
 Q 4
 Q 5 4 3
 A J 8 6 2

Q: 1 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
2Pass2Pass
2NTPass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: Your partner shows extra strength and has six spades. He wouldn't need to rebid the suit with only five after you didn't support the spades at your second turn, and if his values were minimum, he would have rebid two spades to suggest a minimum. You should raise to four spades.

Question 2

 A 9 7 2
 7 5 2

Q: 2 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
3Pass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: Your three diamonds was bold; you could have had more strength. (Some players would have kept the auction alive with a two-heart preference.) But partner's three spades improves your hand: All your honors are working. Bid four hearts or five diamonds.

 K 7 3 2
 A J 9 3

Q: 3 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
2Pass2Pass
3NTPass4Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: Partner suggests six spades and four hearts. If he had a hand with extra strength such as A J 7 6 5 3, A Q 7 3, A 4, 4 or if he had A J 7 6 5, A Q 8 7 3, Q 4, 4, he would have bid two hearts at his second turn. With A K Q 9 5 3, 9 8 7 3, A Q, 4, he might have jumped to three spades. Bid four spades.

 K 5 3

Q: 4 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
2Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: Your partner has extra strength and game interest (even though your two-diamond preference showed at most nine points). If he had a minimum hand with spade support such as A K 4, 5, A 10 7 5 2, J 7 4 2, he would have raised directly to two spades. Bid four spades.

 A K 4

Q: 5 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
---1
DoublePass2Pass
2Pass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Your double showed support for the unbid suits, and when you bid a suit next, you showed 17 or more points. Your partner seems to have long clubs but few values. Game is impossible. Pass and hope for a plus. He may hold 6 5, 5, 8 6 5 3, J 9 8 6 5 2.
