Not all a matter of true and false by Frank Stewart

The answers to today's five question are not all a matter of true and false, some of them may be a matter of style or preference. If you learn something new or don't agree with me, make sure you play the same thing as your partner.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 Q J 10
 A K Q 10 5
 10 7
 Q J 7

Q: 1 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: You have a game, but which game is uncertain. You may well belong at 3NT, but if partner holds A 3 2, 6, 6 4 2, A K 10 6 4 2, you need to play at five clubs. If he has K 3 2, J 6, J 2, A K 10 6 4 2, you need to reach four hearts. Bid two spades to let partner make a further descriptive bid.

Question 2

 7 6 4
 A 9 8
 J 6

Q: 2 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: You have enough strength to invite game but not quite enough to force to game. Jump to three diamonds if in your methods a jump-preference in opener's minor suit is invitational. If it would be forcing or if you aren't sure, underbid slightly with two diamonds or risk a bid of 2NT.

Question 3

 K J 9 8 7 4
 10 6 5 3

Q: 3 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1NTPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2NT: You would like to bid two diamonds to sign off at a safe spot, and maybe your bidding style would let you do so. But most pairs would treat a two-diamond response as conventional -- perhaps a "transfer." To show a weak hand with long diamonds, they might jump directly to three diamonds or use some other sequence to sign off, like a transfer with 2NT or 3. Give yourself full points if your choice of answer allows you to sign off in a diamond part-score.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 A Q 6 5 3
 6 2
 J 9 8 5
 A K

Q: 4 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass2Pass
2NTPass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: I wouldn't be eager to insist on 3NT. Partner's hand may be short in diamonds. A bid of three diamonds is possible, but its meaning would be ambiguous. Bid three hearts. Partner won't assume better support than you have. With three cards in hearts, you could have raised at your second turn.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 8 3
 A K 7 2
 J 8 5 4 2
 K 7

Q: 5 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--12
?

 Your choice:
A: Double: A bid of three diamonds would commit you to game. You lack the values for that, but you must do something; the player at your left may be about to raise the spades. A player in a practiced partnership would make a negative double to show a fair hand (at least) with length and strength in the unbid suits.
