When you have found a fit by Frank Stewart

When you have found a fit, half of the work is done, but then you still have to figure out at which level you should play.

What's the correct bid to show partner your strength?

Test yourself in these five examples.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 A K 8 2
 K J 5
 A 10 9 4
 A K

Q: 1 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
---1
DoublePass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: If the opening bidder has his bid, your partner has little or nothing. Still, he might hold one useful queen or a five-card spade suit. Raise to three spades, saying that you can undertake a nine-trick contract even if partner is broke. If he has a sign of a trick, he should go on to game.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 A Q 9
 8 7 6 5 2
 A 10 7
 K 8

Q: 2 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3NT: To bid four hearts would not be a mistake, especially if your partner's raise guarantees four-card heart support. But if he might have raised with a hand such as 3 2, A 10 4, K Q 4, Q J 10 6 5 (as I would), bid 3NT to offer a choice of games. If he has a distributional hand, he can bid again.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 J
 A K J 10 5
 A J 10 4
 Q J 10

Q: 3 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
2Pass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: You have too much extra strength to sign off at 3NT. Your partner would pass that with a hand such as A Q 6 4, Q 4, 7 6 5, A K 7 6. Bid three hearts, suggesting a six-card or strong five-card suit. If partner bids 3NT next, raise to 4NT as a "quantitative" try for a notrump slam.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 A K 8 7 4
 A 9 6
 J 8 7
 9 6

Q: 4 - What do you bid next as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: You have 12 good points and heart support, hence you must make sure of reaching game. Bid four hearts. After your one-over-one response of one spade, a jump-preference to three hearts would be invitational, not forcing. You would choose that bid if your king of spades were the jack.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 A 4 3
 K 10 7 3
 9 5
 A 7 4 3

Q: 5 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Game is possible if partner's hand is suitable. Bid three clubs to help him evaluate the degree of fit. If he has a hand with help in clubs such as 7 6, A 9 4 2, A 10 7 6, K Q 2, he will bid four hearts even though his high-card values are minimum. With J 6, A 9 4 2, A K 6 4, J 6 2, he will sign off at three hearts.
